A blank canvas where modernity merges with the traditional

About the project

A joint project by Thirdway Interiors and Integra, the concept for Number 1 West Smithfield was to create a space that embraced the best of both modern and traditional styles. This prestigious office space is located in Farringdon, overlooking the landmark turrets of the Smithfield Market — an organisation that can trace its roots back as far as 1215, the era of the Magna Carta. The scope of the project was to completely strip out all original services and partitions from this office space and install striking new exposed services in a refurbished open plan area. Integra also completely refurbished the toilets and installed new lighting in core areas.

The key challenge was ensuring the refurbishment complemented the existing building architecture and would both suit the design proposals and be cost-effective in order to fully meet the client’s requirements.

Exposed services as shown here require a very high level of coordination between all teams. Aesthetics are a key consideration with fully visible wiring, lighting, and cable trays.

Solutions

The design phase on this project was very in-depth to ensure that the client’s requirements were fully understood and no detail was missed.

Fully-exposed containment systems were installed for supporting cabling and pipework. These were then spray painted in situ along with the ceiling. Contemporary suspended LED lighting was installed in the office area, fed via galvanized conduit.

Air conditioning cassette units were suspended and enclosed. The toilets and core areas were completely refitted to bring them up to modern standards and to complement the overall theme.
